My mother found this fabric in Nice, I have never heard of it before. African wax print fabrics are 100% cotton and are created to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The colors are each printed separately using resin and what looks to me like a screen (similar to the screens they use to print t-shirts, only a lot bigger). Traditionally, they are a means of communication among women – different symbols and colors transmit different information – but I am sure that tradition is not as present anymore. Because of the way they are printed, the colors are just as intense on both sides and the resin makes the fabric stiff which gives it an elegant fall. They are very resistant and can last for many, many years.
Please note, due to the printing process, the pattern presents some errors.
It has two ribbons on the inside that you can tie together to help you secure it in place, but don’t worry, no one can see them. So, you can wear it as a dress or over an outfit, just remove the belt and you have a coat-type-thing that is for sure a noticeable statement.
